Monsoon season is officially upon us, and for those new to the area there are several things to know about how to best deal with the unique desert storms that can roll through the region at this time of year.
What is the “monsoon”?
The term refers to the wind shift seen during the summer months that draws moisture to a typically dry area. When prevailing, or strongest, winds change direction, tropical moisture is drawn to the north from Mexico, creating conditions favorable for isolated thunderstorms that can be intense. ....

Officials seek ban on erosion in washes from pools

The Maricopa Flood Control District is working with City officials to prevent erosion in the city washes caused by residents.
An ordinance banning the release of water pool backwashing, specifically onto the banks of the washes is proposed. As more and more residents drain their pools into the wash, the district is having to foot the repair bill. ....

Flood Control District moves fast on Santa Rosa Wash repairs

As work neared completion on a “repair and replace” maintenance project in the Santa Rosa Wash, David Alley did a walkthrough last week.
The district manager of the Maricopa Flood Control District identified four issues not included in the original scope of work by the contractor, KLP Enterprises, which may have concluded the project as early as Friday.
As a result, the MFCD board of directors had a special meeting on Thursday night on Zoom to hear Alley describe the issues and repairs, and to consider amending the original contract to authorize the additional work. ....

For Maricopans who share a grand vision for their growing city, Thursdayâs city planning session was like Christmas, a birthday and Mardi Gras rolled into one.
City Manager Rick Horst laid out an ambitious vision for the city, with numerous projects floated to increase livability for residents and propel efforts to become a destination city. Projects range from near-term to long-term â some would likely be decades down the road â and are as varied as additional street lamps and cleanup of blighted sections to a multi-use stadium at Copper Sky and the potential for a light rail line connecting Maricopa with the Valley. ....
