Sanibel library to present ‘Battle of Fort Myers’ By SPL - | May 18, 2021 PHOTO PROVIDED Duane Shaffer’s display of Civil War memorabilia at the Sanibel Public Library. Locals and visitors can attend U.S. Civil War history programs via Zoom with Duane Shaffer of the Sanibel Public Library. Shaffer will present “The Battle of Fort Myers” on May 28 at 10 a.m. In February 1865, angry farmers, cattlemen and Confederate soldiers attacked the Union fort on the Caloosahatchee River. The defenders of the fort were a mix of Colored Regiment soldiers, Union sympathizers and men from the New York Volunteer Infantry. The battle in Fort Myers has the distinction of being the southern-most battle of the Civil War. More details and login instructions are available at www.sanlib.org. Sanibel library seeking materials for its archives By SPL - | May 11, 2021 PHOTO PROVIDED Beth Jarrell, Danny Hussey and Betty Anholt have been digitizing archive materials at the Sanibel Public Library. The Sanibel Public Library is seeking stories, photos and videos of people and places on Sanibel and Captiva for its digital archives, which can now be accessed online through the library’s homepage. With over 2,000 items, the ever-growing collection is a peek into the islands’ past. To browse the images, newspapers and oral histories, visit www.sanlib.org. Seed development for the ongoing project is supported in part by the Roni Jo Freer Fund of the Sanibel Public Library Foundation. ....
Thank you for the support By Staff | Apr 20, 2021 To the editor: The Shell Islands Garden Club would like that thank our island community for its enthusiastic response to our caladium fundraiser. As a result, there will be dozens of Sanibel and Captiva gardens bursting with showy caladium colors throughout the spring and summer. Proceeds from the caladium sales will benefit island beautification projects, as well as nonprofit groups that promote native plant landscaping and gardening for wildlife. Also, a big thank you goes out to all those who visited and enjoyed SIGC’s “Art in Bloom” exhibit this month at the Sanibel Public Library. A joint production by floral arrangers from the SIGC and artists from the Sanibel-Captiva Art League, the exhibit will return again in 2023. See you all then! ....

On March 17 at 10 a.m., he will present “1943 Operation Eiche (Oak).” Learn about the German paratroopers’ rescue of Italian dictator Benito Mussolini from the Apennine Mountains in southern Italy in 1943.
