Free software for small businesses: Mission Valley startup GoSite partners with EDC for giveaway

One of San Diego’s fastest-growing software startups, GoSite, is giving away access to its suite of digital tools to 100 small, local businesses as part of a new economic development program in the region.
The free software meets a critical need for many brick-and-mortar, service-based businesses like auto shops, restaurants and retailers: the ability to be found and run their businesses online. This need was perpetuated by the catastrophic effects of shutdown orders in 2020, forcing many mom-and-pop shops to do their work online or do no business at all.
“A lot of small businesses don’t know where to start when moving from paper and pen to online,” said Victoria Ashton, vice president of people operations at GoSite. “There are so many different solutions for everything from payments to websites to messaging to reviews. It’s confusing and it’s expensive.” ....

It is surprising that people would vote to tax themselves to help others. It is surprising that the way has been paved to build new housing and provide new services. Given the magnitude of the housing and homelessness crisis in Los Angeles, perhaps it’s not that surprising; however, the response and the action are admirable.
In most cities and towns, the development process is led by developers. They find deals, bring plans to the cities and negotiate for development. This inefficient and expensive process always drives up the cost of development and reduces planning to a series of ad hoc transactions over decades. The results are slow, and rarely, if ever, affordable to working people, never mind the poor. ....

In his first State of the County address, Board of Supervisors Chairman Nathan Fletcher laid out a sweeping agenda that he acknowledged might be labeled as too ambitious Thursday night, Feb. 18.
With the county still dealing with a year-long pandemic that has been devastating to many residents and the economy, Fletcher announced several proposals and reforms that focus on social and juvenile justice, job creation, immigration, the environment, behavioral health and addiction recovery. ....
