By Nardine Saad
Oscar winner Olympia Dukakis, the theater veteran who rose to prominence late in her career with memorable turns in 1980s films such as “Moonstruck” and “Steel Magnolias,” has died at the age of 89.
Dukakis, who appeared in Bay Area productions and also starred in the adaptation of Armistead Maupin’s “Tales of the City,” “Look Who’s Talking” and “Mr. Holland’s Opus,” died at her home in New York City.
“My beloved sister, Olympia Dukakis, passed away this morning in New York City,” wrote her brother Apollo, who confirmed her death on his Facebook page Saturday. “After many months of failing health she is finally at peace and with her (husband) Louis (Zorich).” ....

“The Call”
As she steps into her closet to get dressed for the night, a transgender woman (Nektarios Theodorou) receives a devastating call from her brother about the death of their mother. In a 10-minute, unbroken shot, “The Call” peers into an emotionally blistering story confined to a small, intimate setting. The camera’s vantage point doesn’t change, only inching closer as the ca ....

Four Queer Shorts Screening at This Year's San Francisco Greek Film Festival - San Francisco Bay Times

By Gary M. Kramer–
There are still a few more days to watch films screening at the 18th Annual San Francisco Greek Film Festival, which ends April 25. The more than two dozen features, documentaries, and shorts are available online for free with a reservation. (Some geoblocking applies.) This year’s program offers four short films featuring gay and trans characters. Here is a rundown of what to watch.
Escaping the Fragile Planet, written and directed by Thanasis Tsimpinis, opens with a disclaimer that the short was made in July 2019, and any similarities to COVID-19 are purely coincidental. It soon becomes clear why. Two young men (Michail Tabakakis and Nikos Lekakis) meet when one enters a record store where the other worked. Outside, there is a lethal pink mist, and with no one having long to live, the guys spent the rest of their time on Earth together. Tsimpinis’s short is a charming, if brief, romance. The characters talk about their fears, eat plenty of junk fo ....

Screen Grabs: Wine, mystery, folk music, black comedy at Greek Film Fest

Greece may be the sun-kissed cradle of Western culture and a perennial magnet for tourism, but in recent decades it has seldom had a high profile in the film world. During the “golden age” of the 1950s and ‘60s things were somewhat different, as talents like stars Melina Mercouri and Irene Papas, plus directors Michael Cacoyannis and Costa-Gavras, achieved major international recognition. After that, however, a variety of factors contributed to a shrinking of exported features, the most prominent exceptions being later films by late slow-cinema master Theo Angelopoulos and the idiosyncratic, absurdism-inclined Yorgo Lanthimos (though his projects are mostly shot abroad in English these days). ....
