Western Neighborhoods Project is a 501(c)3 California nonprofit that specializes in preserving, interpreting, and sharing the history of San Francisco s west side from the community s point of view. From our Home for History at 1617 Balboa Street in the Richmond District, we host lectures, film screenings, panel discussions, and rotating exhibitions. Our work also extends beyond the office, out into the neighborhoods, supporting other nonprofits and local businesses throughout San Francisco as we lead guided walking tours, guest lecture at community meetings, and display local history at festivals. I always perk up when someone says they have old photos from San Francisco that need location identification. Sometimes I’m lucky and know the site; other times there is too little to go on. A grouping of contemporary photos, like in an album, adds more clues to find locations. I recently was presented with a series of photos in two albums that became one of the more challenging and fun projects I have attempted. This is a detective story of sleuthing collaboration, combining old research skills and new digital technology mixed with a good dose of luck. ....

Architects Appleton and Wolfard designed eight modern libraries in the 1950s and 1960s for the San Francisco Public Library, the largest number completed by a single firm. The first, the Parkside branch at Taraval Street and 22nd Avenue, set the pattern for the rest. In the early 2000s, these buildings faced rehabilitation to bring them into compliance with current codes and ADA rules under a bond passed by voters in 2000. The upgrades did not alter their modern character significantly. ....
