LATEST Jan. 19, 7:20 p.m. The Cal Fire San Mateo-Santa Cruz Unit reported a new wildfire Tuesday evening at Little Basin Road and Upper Bloom Grade Road, four miles northwest of Boulder Creek. The Bloom Fire was five acres and zero percent contained as of 7:20 p.m.
Here s what we know as of 7 p.m. Tuesday about other fires in Santa Cruz and San Mateo Counties.
The China Grade Fire, burning on China Grade Road and Foxglove Lane four miles northwest of Boulder Creek in Santa Cruz County, was 20 acres and 100% contained with no evacuations. Cal Fire said they were mopping up, a term used to describe extinguishing residual fire to make sure it doesn t continue to spread outside of an established containment area ....

We received news last week of the death of Fred Hirsch ((Nov. 11, 1933 – Dec.15, 2020), a true working class hero. Fred was a giant in the struggle for all human rights, especially labor rights, and a true internationalist. He was Vice President of the Plumber & Pipefitters Local 393 of Santa Clara and San Benito Counties in California. His activism was always rooted in his being a worker and a union member.
Fred had a significant and continuing impact on us at the Alliance for Global Justice. He was a founder of our Worker to Worker Solidarity Committee. He not only proposed its name, but the two points of its mission: to end US labor’s dependency on government funding and oversight of its international relations; and to develop a new model of direct, worker to worker solidarity. ....

Officials said Wednesday that more than 10% of all COVID-19 related deaths in Monterey, Santa Cruz, and San Benito Counties have been reported since the start of the new year.
On Dec. 31, Monterey County had 193 reported deaths, Santa Cruz County had 83 and San Benito County had 29. Those numbers now stand at 216, 91, and 34. The 36 new cases out of the 341 total bring the percentage of deaths since Dec. 31 to about 10.5%.
Yesterday and Tuesday, Monterey County has reported 20 new deaths, Santa Cruz County has reported 8 and San Benito County reported 5. The total number of deaths in the past 36 hours tops 33, about 9.7% of all deaths reported on the Central Coast since the start of the pandemic. ....
