Hays County POSAC set to discuss bond projects during upcoming meeting

Tuesday, August 3, 2021
The Hays County Parks and Open Space Advisory Commission (POSAC) will host a virtual meeting on Wednesday at 6 p.m. to present and discuss a project-filled agenda.
POSAC was established by the Hays County Commissioners Court in February of 2020.
Initially, the purpose of the commission was to establish a process to study the possibility for a potential park, open space, and conservation bond program and to solicit recommendations to the Hays County Commissioners Court on the viability of including a potential bond package on the November 2020 ballot.
This would ultimately lead to Proposition A. According to the POSAC web page, Proposition A “called for the issuance of $75,000,000 in general bonds, along with other potential funding mechanisms, to establish parks, open spaces, conservation lands, and other recreational opportunities.”  ....

City council postpones lobbying ordinance

Wednesday, July 7, 2021
The San Marcos City Council voted to postpone an ordinance creating new restrictions regarding lobbying. But not before yet another continuous debate regarding the proposed legislation.
The ordinance would require lobbyists to register and periodically report contacts they make with elected city officials, board members, commission members and city employees.
Councilmember Shane Scott motioned to postpone the ordinance until Nov. 3, 2021, citing concerns that the ordinance is unfair to certain groups and that it isn’t specific enough in its intent.
“It’s too broad,” Scott said. “To actually name people whether you like them or not, your police officers’ association, your fire department or any other group and say they’re the only people named on this when you’ve got the (San Marcos) River Foundation who are huge lobbyists. There are so many different groups that are lobbyists. Everybody is a lobbyist because they talk to yo ....

Dear Editor,
I am writing in reference to this week’s cover story regarding Cape’s Dam, and I am yet again disgusted by the promotion of misinformation wielded by the power of the press on this pivotal environmental issue. The attempted defamation of Councilmember Derrick was egregious, unwarranted, downright petty and wrong. To be clear: Melissa Derrick is one of the only river warriors we have represented on the San Marcos City Council, and she absolutely supports science. Real science. Not “science.” There’s a huge actually statistically significant difference. ....

Council OKs Cape's Dam agreement with county

Leave out the science.
That’s what one San Marcos City Councilmember suggested when discussing the Cape s Dam Complex. During the recent city council meeting Tuesday, councilmember Melissa Derrick said during the approval of an interlocal agreement and a Memorandum of Understanding between the City of San Marcos and Hays County to leave the science out of the discussion.
I would like to strike one of the whereas. Where it says, whereas the scientific community has also pointed out that the flow rate and the main channel of the San Marcos River in the Mill Race are important factors to consider in the protection of river wildlife, etc. That is not the science for which a lot of scientists believe, Derrick said. I think that we need to leave the science out of this. ....
