Twin brothers make a clean sweep of Santa Barbara neighborhoods picking up bags of trash each week
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - If you have noticed some beaches, trails and parking turnouts a little bit cleaner this summer, it might be because Noah and Ramon Wang have been in the area.
The twin 16-year-old Santa Barbara High School boys took up a summer cleanup project to bag trash they have seen in countless areas.
They started when the school year wrapped up on June 7.
They are getting school credit for volunteer hours, in a program coordinated through the non-profit environmental group, Channelkeeper. ....

Eight years ago, we had a choice of remaining in Santa Cruz or moving to Santa Barbara.
When we compared the two communities, Santa Cruz had a hostile homeless population downtown that would harass you while you were walking around. Santa Cruz had filthy parks with syringes and drug paraphernalia, making it an unsafe and unpleasant environment for children. Santa Cruz had multiple murders within a mile of our house near downtown in the “best”school district.
So, we chose Santa Barbara.
Now, in seeing the post-coronavirus state of downtown and the parks, it appears that Santa Barbara has chosen to go the path of Santa Cruz. Our children are now deprived of the ability to feel safe walking around downtown or to visit parks without a sense of wariness. ....

SB County District Attorney: Criminal charges will not be filed against San Marcos Preserve protesters
SANTA BARBARA COUNTY, Calif. - Santa Barbara County District Attorney Joyce E. Dudley announced Monday that criminal charges will not be filed against the eight protesters arrested during a rally at the San Marcos Preserve last month.
On Feb. 25, a group of people gathered at the preserve to protest a construction project on its land.
Deputies were informed of the situation the evening before and monitored the rally overnight. However, when contractors arrived in the morning with equipment, a group of protesters mobilized to block the entrance to the preserve. ....

SANTA BARBARA COUNTY, Calif. - A major development in the campaign to save open space in the Santa Barbara Foothills was revealed Wednesday.
We are delighted to announce today that we have an option to purchase the 101 acres of the west mesa of the San Marcos Foothills, said attorney Marc Chytilo.
Chytilo represents the Save the San Marcos Foothills Organization. He was flanked by dozens of local residents, environmentalists and, members of the Chadmar Group, an upscale development company.
Longtime local resident, Peter Schuyler, addressed the crowd gathered at the trailhead off Via Gaitero before Chytilo revealed that a tentative deal had been reached between the developer and those hoping to preserve the open land. ....

Eight protestors arrested for obstructing movement of contractors near San Marcos Preserve
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Santa Barbara County Sheriff s deputies arrested eight people and cited one during a protest against development at the San Marcos Preserve Thursday morning.
The sheriff s office said they became aware of the protest around 8 p.m. Wednesday night when contractors called to report a potential for conflict with the protestors at their construction site on the north end of Via Gaitero.
Deputies responded to monitor the situation overnight and said they spoke with protestors multiple times.
As morning came, construction equipment arrived, and a group of protestors mobilized to stop the contractors from entering private property on the north end of Via Gaitero. ....
