Born in Bristol in the early 19th century, she later became the first woman in America to receive a medical degree. The nine Blackwell siblings were the children of a paradox. Their father Samuel, a Dissenter from the Church of England, was both a sugar refiner and an abolitionist, a man who profited from a commodity that depended on enslaved labour – which he abhorred. ....

âWomen are feeble, narrow, frivolous â¦ and undeveloped in thought and feeling,â she once wrote to a suffragist, voicing her objection to the activistâs claim that the tyranny of men was to blame for the subjugation of women. âThe exclusion and constraint woman suffers, is not the result of purposed injury or premeditated insult.
