Plymouth area veterans help dedicate Vietnam Memorial Wall

PLYMOUTH – Local Vietnam veterans participated in last weekend’s dedication of the Vietnam Memorial in Fall River.
A group from Plymouth and surrounding towns traveled to the unveiling of the Vietnam Memorial Wall with a replica of a helicopter that was widely used during the war and an icon of the conflict.
Local veterans built the helicopter to honor Vietnam veterans for a local parade several years ago and now are frequently invited to travel with it to attend Vietnam War memorials and events.
Denis Russell, commander of VFW Post 1822, said last weekend’s dedication was especially moving as it unveiled an 80 percent scale model of the Vietnam Memorial Wall built in Washington , D.C., in 1982. ....

Volunteers welcome for three-day cleanup in New Bern underserved area

This a good weekend to visit two of New Bern s oldest predominately black neighborhoods to help in a community cleanup and to attend a public Community Resource Fair.
Cleanup volunteers are welcome April 29 through May 1, any amount of time from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. PPE provided and Covid precautions will be in place. Call 349-8274.
The city of New Bern Public Works will assist in supplies and trash haul-away.
Following the end of the Saturday May 1 cleanup, volunteers and the public are invited to the 1 to 3 p.m. Community Resource Fair at The Omega Center, 800 Cedar St.
It includes free hot dogs and hamburgers, free haircuts and health screenings. ....

Funeral home business changing with the times in New Bern, elsewhere

Over his 20 years in the business, Rex Bennett, Cotten Funeral Home’s managing director, has witnessed firsthand the changes that have taken place in public attitudes toward after-death arrangements and in the way funeral homes are maintained financially.
Bennett said the biggest shift he has seen is from a predominantly burial-based business to one that is largely concerned with cremation, which at one time was practically unthinkable in the United States. He said the change is driven by the perceived simplicity of cremation, financial concerns and the reality of today’s more transient society.
The history of Cotten Funeral Home in New Bern mirrors both the transformations that have taken place within the funeral business itself and the American public’s shifting attitudes about death over the last century. ....
