Missing persons issue won't go away; serious effort required to address concerns – HRCSL – The Island

By Shamindra Ferdinando
Genuine post-war national reconciliation will not be possible unless grievances of those who had suffered during the war and after were addressed, Harsha Kumara Navaratne, a member of the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL) says.
Emphasizing the responsibility on the part of the government as regards concerns of all communities, Navaratne asserted that the alleged disappearances of persons who had been handed over to the military by their families soon after the war was brought to a conclusion remained a contentious issue.
Prominent civil society activist Navaratne said so during a brief discussion with

Cabinet meeting: Weerasekera raises display of LTTE flag in UK parliament square

By Shamindra Ferdinando
Public Security Minister Rear Admiral Sarath Weerasekera, during Monday’s Cabinet meeting, has raised the issue of the UK promoting the separatist ideology by allowing the display of LTTE flags at the British parliament square.
Minister Weerasekera pointed out that LTTE flags were displayed alongside the Union Jack much to the disappointment of those who cherished the eradication of LTTE terrorism. British nationals of Sri Lankan origins displayed LTTE flags at a protest to mark the conclusion of the war on May 19, 12 years ago.
 Minister Weerasekera told
The Island Monday night that he stressed the responsibility on the part of the government to seek a clarification in that regard from the British High Commissioner in Colombo Sarah Hulton. “Foreign Minister Dinesh Gunawardena endorsed concerns raised by me”, he said. ....

'Am I under surveillance?' Canadian envoy asks Sri Lanka as details of closed meeting surface

While it is unclear when the high commissioner met Islam, there was reportedly no media present during the meeting. And yet, details of the meet surfaced in several media reports.
However, Sri Lankan police spokesperson DIG Ajith Rohana reportedly denied these allegations of surveillance.
This also comes in the backdrop of a United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) session, where an impending resolution against Sri Lanka’s alleged human rights violations during its 26-year-long civil war could be put to vote.
Canada and the UK have been vociferous supporters of the resolution, which has been rejected by the Sri Lankan government. ....

What if the British High Commissioner in Colombo Sarah Hulton met with the Ambassador of South Korea Woonjin Jeong on Tuesday, the 2nd of March, 2021? What if he was accompanied by former Foreign Minister and the man who happily tossed Sri Lanka under the UNHRC bus driven by a warmongering Uncle Sam? What if Canadian High Commissioner in Colombo David McKinnon held discussions with his Bangladeshi counterpart, Tareq  Ariful Islam, at the Canada House, Colombo 7, around the same time?
Now there are no laws against diplomats meeting other diplomats. There are no laws to stop diplomats meeting citizens of the country they happen to be posted in. However, it is significant that both South Korea and Bangladesh are members of the Human Rights Council. It is significant because in a few days time a vote will be taken in Geneva on a resolution on (well, ‘against,’ really) Sri Lanka. It’s a one ....
