Southpointe revving up with two new businesses, live events


Mike Swisher welcomes the heat.
“The streets are filling with people, restaurant tables are full inside and out, new businesses are opening, and outdoor events have returned,” said Swisher, principal at Horizon Properties Group LLC, a real estate development company and developer of the 813-acre mixed-use park.
Life in the sprawling park has not returned to its semi-frenetic, pre-pandemic pace — yet. But the Cecil Township location is not the eerie ghost town it had largely been for nearly a year. Workers are returning to their places of employment, businesses have moved in and events are scheduled.
Two new tenants are on board: David’s Physical Therapy and Sports Medicine Center, at 1800 Main St., Suite 114; and Doodlebugs! Children’s Learning Academy, at 501 Consol Energy Drive. ....

Erie Election: Schember, Anderson outraise opponents in marquee races


In the two marquee races on Tuesday s primary ballot, Erie Mayor Joe Schember, the Democratic incumbent, outraised his two opponents, while Erie County Councilman Carl Anderson had the largest cash haul in the race for Erie County executive.
Schember’s campaign committee, The Committee to Elect Joseph Schember, reported total contributions for the period Jan. 1 to May 3 of $138,944, which included $69,560 carried over from previous reporting periods. 
Schember’s campaign reported spending $46,886 during the period, as well as a cash-on-hand balance of $92,058, according to finance reports. 
Schember’s largest contribution from a political committee was $15,000, from Steamfitters Local Union 449’s political action committee. Schember also received $5,000 from the Erie Insurance PAC and $2,500 from LPAC Erie, reports show. ....

A major Juneteenth celebration is in the works, in honor of the emancipation of enslaved people in the United States.
Officials say it’s a much deserved moment highlighting diversity and progress locally and across the state.
Pittsburgh community leaders came together Wednesday to announce a number of plans and celebrations for Juneteenth.
