Community leaders announcing Juneteenth celebrations in the city of Pittsburgh.
A major Juneteenth celebration is in the works, in honor of the emancipation of enslaved people in the United States.
Officials say it’s a much deserved moment highlighting diversity and progress locally and across the state.
Pittsburgh community leaders came together Wednesday to announce a number of plans and celebrations for Juneteenth.

Pennsylvania's child welfare system closed to public, until a child dies


When Antonio Gonzalez Jr. died in his home, about an hour south of Erie, the 14-year-old weighed 92 pounds and had two black eyes.
His father had waited about 10 hours to call the police. It turns out, he had beaten and starved the boy.
Social workers visited the Gonzalez family in the years before Antonio died. Police had as well, but his family slid through the system, despite the teenager’s thin frame and the squalid conditions in which they lived. He was enrolled in cyber school when he died, hidden from the view of anyone outside the family.
On the final day of his life, he was hosed down by his father and left on a tarp, where he complained of not feeling well. His father threw a bucket of water on him and left him there. ....

CHARTIERS TOWNSHIP, Pa. (KDKA) A major attraction is coming to Washington County.
The Pennsylvania Trolley Museum is in the process of building a 21,000-square-foot welcome and education center in Chartiers Township.
The new facility will be great for tourism and the economy after more than a year of struggles due to the pandemic.
The Pennsylvania Trolley Museum typically gets around 30,000 visitors per year. The new facility will be able to accommodate around 50,000 people.

Bethel Park School Board race has 7 candidates seeking nods for 4 ballot spots


Bethel Park School District’s political landscape will change this year as no incumbents sought reelection.
Those on the board calling it a career, for now, include board president Pamela Dobos, Russ Spicuzza, Connie Ruhl and Ken Nagel.
Seven people have cross-filed seeking Democratic and Republican nominations in the May 18 primary, according to the Allegheny County Office of Elections unofficial candidate list.
Candidates on the primary ballot are Sean Browne, Buffie Faes, Dan Grzybek, Gail Hoppe, Sharon Janosik, James Means Jr. and Rory Smith.

PENNSYLVANIA Where are Pennsylvania s safest places to live? A new ranking attempts to answer just that.
SafeWise, a security product review platform, has ranked the 10 safest municipalities in the Keystone State based on recent crime statistics and data from the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The organization ranked 50 Pennsylvania cities in 2021 using recent crime statistics and data from the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
According to SafeWise, 136 Pennsylvania communities met the criteria to be considered for the
ranking. Seven of the cities on the list reported no violent crimes and 25 reported fewer than five total violent crimes.

The rankings are intended to highlight cities with low crime rates and to inspire municipalities to talk about how they can make cities safer, according to the SafeWise website. ....
