Andrews was born in 1871 in Newcastle upon Tyne in England to a family who were practitioners of the Catholic Apostolic Church–a sect that believed in prophecy, speaking in tongues, and the regular occurrence of healing miracles–considered to be one of the ancestors of what would come to be known in the United States as Pentecostalism.
