Adel Halasa accepts the Charles Goodyear Medal in memory of Nissim Calderon, who died in February 2020. Halasa, the 1997 medalist, worked with Calderon at Goodyear. The Charles Goodyear Medal is the highest honor given out by the ACS Rubber Division.

AKRON Those conversations that are at the core of the ACS Rubber Division s Women of the Rubber Division initiatives aren t going anywhere.
The Rubber Division, which recently launched its WORD Conversations program, an online event focusing on the careers and achievements of women making an impact on the rubber industry, has added to the schedule this year.
Tamsin Astor, chief habitat scientist, international speaker and author, will be the featured guest during an hour-long discussion July 21. The program begins at noon ET. ....

Judit Puskas greatest professional accomplishments are close to the heart.
It s fitting, then, that when the Charles Goodyear Medal the ACS Rubber Division s highest honor is placed around her neck, the medallion rests right by her own heart.
There are many reasons Puskas was the first woman chosen to receive the award, accepting it during the 2017 Spring Technical Meeting. Her list of professional accomplishments is long. Among those achievements, though, is the co-invention of a particular polymer, one used on the Taxus coronary stent, which has been implanted in the hearts of more than 10 million people, saving lives along the way. ....

AKRON Building on the success of its Women of the Rubber Division (WORD) programming, the ACS Rubber Division is expanding opportunities for learning, networking and professional development.
This month, the Rubber Division is introducing a webinar series featuring conversations with some of the industry s female leaders. Each hour-long webinar offers the opportunity to network, share stories and ideas and hear from professionals industrywide.
Judit Puskas, the first and only woman to receive the Charles Goodyear Medal, the highest award bestowed by the Rubber Division, will speak during the first event, planned for noon EDT March 24. ....

Obit: Aubie Coran, 1995 Charles Goodyear medalist, dies at 88

SARASOTA, Fla. Aubert Aubie Coran, the 1995 recipient of the ACS Rubber Division s Charles Goodyear Medal, died Oct. 20 in Sarasota. He was 88.
Coran pioneered work in thermoplastic elastomers and delayed action accelerated sulfur vulcanization during a 36-year career at Monsanto Co., leading to his receiving the Rubber Division s highest honor.
During his time at Monsanto, he helped develop a number of materials, including Santoprene, Santogard PVI and Vocol accelerator for vulcanization. His research also delved extensively into the vulcanization of rubber with sulfur and accelerators.
Although there have been many other contributions over the years to our understanding of vulcanization chemistry, it seems clear that he played the leading role in the remarkable progress made since about 1960, A.N. Gent wrote in a letter supporting Coran s nomination for the medal. ....
