Harvard honors new military officers in ROTC commissioning ceremony

The conferring of degrees is a critical rite of passage for any graduating student, but for those who are also members of the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC), the week of Harvard Commencement ceremonies brings an additional milestone: the commissioning service.
This year 11 members of the Harvard Class of 2021 will take their oaths as new military officers during small, in-person services attended by a few select family members and friends. The combined U.S. Army/U.S. Air Force event will take place at Hanscom Air Force Base in Bedford, Massachusetts, while the U.S. Navy ceremony will unfold on the deck of the U.S.S. Constitution, the world’s oldest commissioned warship afloat, docked in the Charlestown Navy Yard. Both events will be livestreamed on Facebook. ....

The USS Constitution went underway Friday from Charlestown Navy Yard for the first time in more than a year. The underway featured demonstrations on climbing, firing a 19th century, 24-pound long gun and using shipboard weaponry, and it ended with a 21-gun salute.USS Constitution fired an additional 17-gun salute as she passes U.S. Coast Guard Sector Boston, the former site of the Edmund Hartt’s Shipyard, where USS Constitution was built and launched on Oct. 21, 1797. Last week, Lowell’s Boat Shop in Amesbury launched the Mayflower Shallop II, an historical reproduction of the small rowing and sailing vessel the Pilgrims would have used to “discover” Plymouth Harbor in 1621.
The shallop will stay at the end of the LBS dock on the Merrimack River for about three weeks before traveling to Plymouth to join Mayflower II.
“The boat will remain here to finish the final work,” said Graham McKay, LBS executive director and master boat builder. “We launched it to take advantage of the astronomically high tides and I would expect to leave around the third week in May. It remains to be seen if we’re going to sail it down or it will go by truck. It’s a matter of insurance. Insurance companies are getting nervous about boats.” ....

The USS Constitution Museum reopens to the public Thursday, the 45th anniversary of its opening in the Charlestown Navy Yard. The museum will be open Thursdays through Sundays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.Anne Grimes Rand, USS Constitution Museum President and CEO, will be there with a wide smile under her mask to greet visitors on this historic day. We are thrilled to welcome visitors back to the USS Constitution Museum on our 45th birthday, Rand said. We are committed to safely providing educational and engaging experiences for our guests. Rand commemorated the museum s 45th anniversary by firing the morning cannon on Old Ironsides.
