CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - A pandemic doesn’t mean any less work for first responders. The Charlottesville-Albemarle Rescue Squad, or CARS, is busier than ever.
“I think the work that we do is priceless,” CARS Chief Virginia Leavell said. “If I had to put a price tag on it, the hours that our volunteers donate is over $2 million in value to the taxpayers.”
Chief Leavell has been on the front lines with CARS for almost 20 years, but her first real experience with the rescue squad came at a much younger age. ....

Dozen: Kostas Alibertis turned dedication to others into lifelong labor of love


A 1985 story in The Daily Progress helped lead Kostas Alibertis to turn his dedication to caring for others down a path to benefit the whole community.
While attending the University of Virginia, Alibertis took an EMT course for general knowledge. A 1985 Progress story said the Western Albemarle Rescue Squad was looking for more help over the summer, and he decided to volunteer.
“I came out here and embraced it, and it became a passion and a love,” he said. “Doing community service is certainly something that is part of who I am as a person.”
Alibertis is on his second, now 20-year long, stint as chief of the rescue squad, one of the few all-volunteer fire or rescue stations left in Albemarle County. ....

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - Following a day of heavy rainfall, the Charlottesville-Albemarle Rescue Squad (CARS) had to rescue a man from high water off Watts Farm Rd. in Albemarle County.
CARS officials told NBC29 on the scene that a man drove his van past a ‘road closed’ sign, and then ran into high water. Members of the volunteer rescue squad responded and said they found the man hanging on a tree branch. They took a boat out and safely brought the man back. ....
