UVa Health to release liens, judgments on low-income patients as part of new billing policies

The University of Virginia Health System will release liens and judgments filed against most middle- and lower-income patients and limit patients’ financial liability for catastrophic medical care as part of new billing policies that focus on a patient’s ability to pay.
Health System officials also will create an ombudsman position to assist patients with disputes and redesign intake and appointment scheduling to inform patients about insurance coverage limits and financial assistance prior to treatment.
Under the new policies announced Monday, the Health System will remove liens and judgments for patients whose earnings are 400% or less of the federal poverty income level of $12,880 for a single person or $26,500 for a family of four. ....

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - Dr. Cameron Webb has been tapped for a senior role in President-elect Biden’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Webb, a doctor in the University of Virginia Health System and former candidate for 5th District representative, has been named the senior policy advisor for COVID-19 equity. In the role, Dr. Webb would address issues of racial disparities in impact from the virus, and ensuring equitable distribution of the vaccine into the future. ....

Dozen: Kostas Alibertis turned dedication to others into lifelong labor of love


A 1985 story in The Daily Progress helped lead Kostas Alibertis to turn his dedication to caring for others down a path to benefit the whole community.
While attending the University of Virginia, Alibertis took an EMT course for general knowledge. A 1985 Progress story said the Western Albemarle Rescue Squad was looking for more help over the summer, and he decided to volunteer.
“I came out here and embraced it, and it became a passion and a love,” he said. “Doing community service is certainly something that is part of who I am as a person.”
Alibertis is on his second, now 20-year long, stint as chief of the rescue squad, one of the few all-volunteer fire or rescue stations left in Albemarle County. ....
