SAULT STE. MARIE Four Sault Area Middle School students have been selected to be students of the month for May.
Madison McLean has been chosen as the 8th grade student of the month. Madison is a student and athlete. She always gives her best effort in class and is willing to help other students. Her dedication can be seen academically and on the court or track.
Taylor Meilstrup has been chosen as the 7th grade student of the month. Meilstrup works hard in school, completing all her classwork and pushing herself to be a better student. Meilstrup has exceptional grades and is respected by everyone at school. Along with her academic success, Meilstrup has shown perseverance on the volleyball and basketball courts and on the track field this year. Meilstrup is an example of a student who puts forth the effort and has been successful at adapting to these different times. ....

197 infected in new coronavirus outbreaks at 65 schools, says Michigan’s May 3 school outbreak report

The data was collected on Thursday, April 29, and includes preschools and daycares in those buildings
Last week, the state reported 189 infections in new outbreaks at 41 K-12 school districts.
The biggest new outbreaks involves 14 children and staff at Teddy Bear Playhouse preschool in Oakland County’s Commerce Township, and 10 students at Harlan Elementary in Bloomfield Hills.
K-12 school outbreaks were identified in 23 counties. Below are those outbreaks listed by county.

The Sault Area Middle School is facing problems with students using vapes.
The issue of vaping by our younger students is a growing concern,” said Dr. Tim Hall, superintendent of Sault Schools. “Companies that market these products advertise them as not being harmful when there is ample data that shows otherwise. Parents, families and schools need to be aware of the dangers and help educate our students that e-cigarettes and vaping are not healthy.
According to Child Mind Institute, e-cigarettes are the most frequently used tobacco product among adolescents. Over two million national students in middle and high school were e-cigarette users in 2017, surpassing traditional cigarettes. Concerns are growing amongst teachers, health professionals and parents about the use of vapes amongst minors. ....

Coronavirus update: Chippewa County reaches 1,000 cases

As of Wednesday, data from the State of Michigan reported there have been 1,017 cumulative confirmed cases and 1,336 cumulative probables of COVID-19 in Chippewa County.
There have been 32 deaths because of the virus. On Wednesday, it was reported by the Chippewa County Health Department that 1,995 people have recovered.
Compared to last week’s totals, there had been 989 confirmed cases, 1,308 probable cases and 32 deaths due to COVID-19 in Chippewa County. Per the health department, there had been 1,861 people who recovered from the virus.
War Memorial reminds the community to continue to do their part in staying safe by hand washing, mask wearing and social distancing. The War Memorial COVID-19 + Flu A/B Self Collection Test is open from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday on Nolte Street. ....

Sault Middle School reverts to online learning through Friday
SAULT STE. MARIE Sault Area Middle School has moved to online Google Classroom instruction through Friday.
This decision was the result of a recent outbreak of COVID-19 positive students at the middle school and the resulting number of quarantined students. On Friday, the district was made aware of two positive cases at the middle school and Lincoln Elementary School. On Monday, three more cases were identified at the middle school.
Students are expected to report to their regularly scheduled Google Classrooms during their normal school schedules. Links to their virtual classes will be posted on their teachers Google Classroom sites. ....
