Civics through life experience

I have fond memories of my ninth-grade civics class at Belen Junior High school taught by the late Boleslo Lovato, former mayor of Belen, back in my school year of 1980-81.
Civics was a required course then and it was a useful course for me to learn not only how federal and state governments work but also how local government and quasi-governmental agencies work, too.
One of the foundational lessons was the three branches of government: executive, legislative and judicial. Understanding the difference is fundamental to understanding government.
Before I took that class, I had the opportunity to serve as an honorary page at the New Mexico Legislature and, as a Cub Scout. I was able to meet then Gov. Jerry Apodaca in his office. Both of those experiences gave me some small insight into the legislative and executive branches of government when Mr. Lovato taught us civics a few years later. ....

[Note: This post has been updated after receiving corrected information regarding the chamber’s financial support from the city of Roswell.]
The Roswell Hispano Chamber of Commerce will focus on membership growth as well as the financial and knowledge growth of their business members in the year ahead, according to the group’s executive director, Marcos Nava.
In his third year at the helm of the nonprofit organization, Nava said the coronavirus crisis has hurt many of the city’s Hispanic-owned businesses, as the pandemic has hurt most organizations in the state and elsewhere.
The chamber is still keeping those members that have not paid their dues on their roster, Nava said, in recognition of the difficulties of the current situation. ....

It’s time to think of New Year, and oh boy, do we all wait for a good new year after the one we’ve had. But we all come from a long line of survivors, otherwise we wouldn’t be here. Our ancestors survived dangerous travels, child birth without any doctors present, famines and a multitude of plagues. One day, our descendants will look back on our time and shake their heads as well on how we survived, mentally and physically. ....

Local government, schools and water group describe capital needs
Chaves County governmental entities have requested about $17 million in capital outlay requests as state legislators begin the months’ long process of determining which projects will receive funding for the 2021-22 fiscal year.
Six legislators representing at least a portion of Chaves County heard Friday from city, town, school and water association representatives about the projects they would like money for in the year ahead.
The Southeast New Mexico Economic Development District/Council of Governments coordinates capital outlay funding requests for governmental entities in the southeast portion of the state. An online and phone conference Friday was the first in a series of remote meetings to be held in various counties over the next weeks as legislators ask for details about planned projects and stated needs. ....
