North State Hospitals Begin COVID-19 Inoculations

Hospitals in Butte and Shasta counties began inoculating frontline medical workers against COVID-19 this week.
Mayers Memorial Hospital in Fall River Mills says it administered its first vaccines Wednesday.
Mercy Medical Center and Shasta Regional Medical Center were expected to begin their administrations Thursday.

Dr. Karen Ramstrom, Shasta County’s health officer said she recently listened to disease experts involved in the vaccine review process.
“These vaccine experts and infectious disease experts from throughout the nation were very confident in the efficacy and safety of this vaccine. And all felt that they would be comfortable getting it themselves.” Ramstrom said. ....

Vaccinations against COVID-19 begin in Shasta County

66-year-old Dr. Steve Struve, ICU Medical Director, is the first person at Mercy Medical Center to get the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine.
Hospitals in Shasta County are following both county and CDC guidelines of which healthcare workers who work in high-risk zones - like working with COVID patients - are one of the first to get the vaccine.
Struve explained why he didn’t hesitate to take Pfizer’s new vaccine.
“I’m an ICU physician, I’m 66-years-old, I have bad lungs, I have a history of asthma and I work with COVID patients daily.”
At Mayers Memorial Hospital District in Fall River Mills, about 25 staff members got their first of two doses of the Pfizer vaccine. They should get the second dose in about three weeks. ....

In the Northern California region, representatives for Shasta County s Mercy Medical Center say they always prepare for a surge, including additional resources to expand ICU capacity, if necessary. Medical center representatives say 33 ICU beds are open and 10 additional can be made available. Shasta Regional Medical Center reports having 22 ICU beds and say the ICU is almost full. ....

SHASTA COUNTY, Calif. – With COVID-19 cases climbing, hospitals in Shasta County are prepping for a surge.
Hospital leaders say they have additional resources to help them expand beyond their ICU walls if needed.
Mercy Medical Center has 33 ICU beds. But there are 10 more additional beds that the hospital can move into just in case.
“All of us have the capacity to go beyond our ICU walls, but as I mentioned, we don t like to do,” said Robert Folden with Mercy Medical Center. ....

COVID-19 study takes place in Redding at Shasta Regional Medical Center

The local study is part of a larger effort investigating whether a nasal spray containing the antiseptic Betadine (povidone-iodine) can kill coronavirus in the nose on contact. If it works, Domb said, the product could become an extra layer of protection against coronavirus, to be used in addition to hand washing, wearing masks in public and social distancing from others.
Two-thirds of the study participants will receive the treatment. The rest will receive a placebo, a substance that has no therapeutic effect and is used as a control in testing new drugs.
Participants in the Redding study will go on to self administer five days of nasal sprays at home, according to a promotional notice from Stanford Medicine. ....
