Amid COVID-19, new mothers are facing yet another health crisis: Depression and anxiety.
Since lockdowns began in March 2020, unprecedented numbers of pregnant people and new mothers have struggled to manage their mental health. Rates of depression in the group have increased by 15 to 20 percent, according to research conducted by Brigham and Women’s Hospital. The study found that 36 percent of pregnant and postpartum women reported significant levels of depression, while pre-pandemic rates of perinatal depression were 15 to 20 percent. What’s more, one in five new mothers reported significant levels of generalized anxiety, while over 10 percent reported experiencing symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder. ....

IDAHO FALLS Earlier this year, a woman named Katie Clay unexpectedly went into labor and gave birth to a healthy baby boy in a parking lot. At first, the emergency seemed like it had ended and ended happily. But then, the woman continued to feel labor pains.
Alarmed, she and her mother drove to the birthing center where Clay, much to everyone’s surprise, delivered a second baby. Another boy. She had never known she was pregnant with twins, or that her pregnancy was high-risk.
In east Idaho, pregnant women have multiple birthing plan options. They can choose to see an OBGYN, or, like Clay, opt for what she called the “old-fashioned” way and select a midwife instead. ....

Black Mothers in Power: Pursuing Birth Justice in Delaware

, an independent media group that engages in investigative journalism, political analysis, and Delaware-focused commentary.
Birthing a child is a scary thing. There are risks of injury, anxiety, depression, and death before, during, and after the birth event. The United States has the worst maternal mortality rate of developed countries in the world, and a driving reason is the substandard treatment and care for Black mothers. Our society works hard to limit Black potential across all layers, with our school-to-prison pipelines, routine murders of Black people by “law and order” officers, and negligent or actively harmful medical care. But the assault on Black lives starts before a Black baby is even born. ....

CSUCI Health Science Faculty Member Explores Midwifery's Place in 21st Century Mexico | School Zone

Housing and Development Newsletter
“My book looks at three schools in Mexico trying different approaches to what midwifery should look like, whether it should work within the healthcare system or be autonomous,” Dixon said. “A lot of my book is about how they are grappling with the question of how to work with the Mexican state or how to come in and provide a positive force for change.”
Dixon initially worked with Mexican midwives while traveling to San Miguel de Allende on a grant from her undergraduate institution, the University of Chicago.
“I thought I’d be there interning for a couple of months, then come back and go to medical school,” Dixon said. “But I fell in love with Mexico and the midwives and midwifery in general. I wound up staying five years and immersing myself in that world.” ....
