Over 200,000 teachers across the country are involved in the strike, called by the Ceylon Teachers Union (CTU), Ceylon Teacher Service Union, United Teachers Union and several other unions.
The teacher unions were forced to call the “online learning” strike after police brutally suppressed a protest against the KNDUA on July 8. Several participants, including CTU General Secretary Joseph Stalin, were arrested and detained at an Air Force-controlled quarantine centre.
The KNDUA has been presented to parliament by the defence ministry and will be debated in early August. If passed, it will give the military-controlled tertiary institution, which was originally established to train senior officers, the same powers as other universities, under the University Grants Commission, including to establish more private fee-paying cour ....

In reality, the ban is a major attack on democratic rights, initiated by the Rajapakse government to suppress a growing wave of social opposition. It was announced in response to strikes and demonstrations involving tens of thousands of workers, farmers, students and fishermen in recent weeks, against attacks on social and living conditions and democratic rights in recent weeks.
The claim that the measures have been taken to protect the masses from the pandemic is false. The Rajapakse government reopened the economy months ago, allowing the full operation of factories. Minimal or no health safety measures, including social-distancing, have been implemented in these workplaces, with employees compelled to travel to work on congested buses and railways, paving the way for a rapid spread of the virus. ....

Daily Mirror - Govt. should provide online teaching facilities: Teachers' Service Union


The Government should provide facilities for teachers to conduct online teaching during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Ceylon Teachers’ Service Union (CTSU) said.
CTSU General Secretary Mahinda Jayasinghe told the Daily Mirror that most of the teachers do not have the necessary equipment.
“Teachers don t get a salary which can be satisfied about. They can t afford to buy the equipment that are needed neither able to bear the expenses incurred on mobile data facilities to conduct the online teaching,” he said.
“The mobile signal strength in most of the areas in the country is poor. Data bundles used to communicate are also very expensive and not sufficient,” he said. ....
