Ask William: Oxford's Randolph Hotel concierge uses 'little black book' to help the city


AS the sharp-suited, cheerful concierge at the Randolph Hotel, William Thomson spent almost 15 years sharing his knowledge of the best Oxford can offer.
Whether it be advice on bars and restaurants, tickets for a West End show or Wimbledon or help getting a last minute birthday cake, Mr Thomson was the man in the know.
Unfortunately, he was among 78 staff who lost their jobs at the Beaumont Street hotel last year after Chicago-based Graduate Hotels bought the five-star venue from Macdonald.
Not wanting his in-depth knowledge to go to waste, however, he has gone it alone, setting up his own private concierge service called, of course, Ask William. And after a few quiet months during the national lockdowns, business is now rolling in with clients tapping into his local knowledge and all important ‘little black book’ of contacts. ....

SPEED reductions and planned road closures dominate the latest public notices issued by local authorities in Oxfordshire.
In the last week, a variety of notices have been published by councils, impacting residents in different ways.
From traffic orders to planning applications, these notices stretch right across the county.
20mph limits: Oxfordshire County Council has proposed two orders to replace 30mph speed limits with 20mph ones in both Witney and Bicester.
The orders are for ‘road safety reasons’, in response to the Department for Transport Active Travel initiatives for walking and cycling.
In Witney, this will impact the Cogges area (Church Lane, Meadow View and Stanton Harcourt Road), and the north east of the town (roads by Woodstock Road and Jubilee Way, extending out to: Harvest Way and its junctions with Woodstock Road and Jubilee Road; Madley Way at its junction with Jubilee Way, and Waterford Road at its junction with Jubilee Way). ....
