Lightfoot urges Pritzker to veto firefighters pension bill

Sun-Times file photo
Mayor Lori Lightfoot is urging Gov. J.B. Pritzker to veto a bill boosting pensions for thousands of Chicago firefighters, arguing it would saddle beleaguered taxpayers with perpetual property tax increases and cripple a pension fund dangerously close to insolvency.
It removes the “birth date restriction” that prohibits roughly 2,200 active and retired firefighters born after Jan. 1, 1966 from receiving a 3% annual cost of living increase. Instead, they get half that amount, 1.5% — and it is not compounded.
Martwick has argued the “birth date restriction” already has been moved five times as a way of masking the true cost to the pension fund.

Fire commissioner presides at final graduation before mandatory retirement

Larry Merritt/Chicago Fire Department
A wistful Chicago Fire Commissioner Richard C. Ford II presided over his final graduation ceremony Tuesday before he reaches the mandatory retirement age of 63 that will force him to step down in April.
Mayor Lori Lightfoot has spent the last several months searching for Ford’s $217,728-a-year replacement. His last day on the job will be April 2.
The retiring commissioner didn’t dwell on the changing of the guard during Tuesday’s graduation ceremony at the Robert J. Quinn Fire Academy, 558 W. DeKoven St. that was another eerie, socially distanced affair, due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Illinois Lawmakers Pass Firefighter Pension Bill Upping Benefits

Illinois Lawmakers Pass Firefighter Pension Bill Upping Benefits
The move would add $18 million in extra inflation-adjustment benefits for its first year, expanding the liability for the poorly funded plan.
The Illinois Senate this week pushed through richer benefits for the severely underfunded Chicago firefighters pension plan. The measure, already approved in the legislature’s lower chamber, would add $18 million to the pension liability in the first year, and $30 million in following years.
The state pension bill HB 2451, pushed by the Chicago Firefighters Union Local 2, would remove a birth date restriction for beneficiaries born after Jan. 1, 1966, in the Firemen’s Annuity and Benefit Fund of Chicago (FABF).
