Municipal Elections to be held June 8


CHICKASAW – Registered voters in two of Chickasaw County’s Municipalities will head to the polls on June 8 to cast their ballots for the general elections.
Following a primary and runoff, the general election will be the final hurdle to cross for the candidates seeking election, or in some cases, reelection into their respective offices.
Houston already has a new face joining the board this next term in the form of Matt Callahan, who beat incumbent Frank Thomas for the Ward 3 Alderman seat in the Republican primary.
The remaining seats that will be voted on in Houston are Alderman of Ward 1 and Alderman at Large. ....

Chickasaw Nation Governor Bill Anoatubby issued an executive proclamation in response to the Oklahoma Court of Criminal Appeals ruling in Bosse v. Oklahoma. This ruling formalizes Chickasaw Nation and federal jurisdiction over crimes involving American Indians within the Chickasaw Nation treaty territory.
In his proclamation, Gov. Anoatubby stated the “rulings affirm what we have always known: The Chickasaw people continue, and so too does our treaty homeland.”
That proclamation, one of several actions taken today by Gov. Anoatubby, directs all officials, employees, officers, departments, commissions and agencies of the Chickasaw Nation’s Executive Department to act in accordance with the ruling and “a sovereign interest in public safety throughout our treaty homeland.” ....

1 What are the freedmen?
The freedmen were slaves owned by the Five Tribes that were brought with the tribes during the Trail of Tears. Eight to ten thousand Black people were enslaved throughout Indian Territory.
2 How were the salves treated by the tribes?
During the Civil War, the tribes’ members owned approximately 10,000 slaves. Unlike slavery in the southern states, the form of slavery in Indian Territory widely varied. The Creek and Seminole often intermarried with their slaves and allowed a broad range of freedoms. The Cherokee resisted intermarriage but pursued benign relationships on their small farms. The Choctaw and Chickasaw more closely approximated the system of white slaveholders on the cotton pl ....
