History: Smithtown Bull Statue Turns 80

Legend has it that in the 1600s Richard Smith rode a bull around the area to claim land that eventually became Smithtown.

First unveiled on May 10, 1941, Whisper the Bull, the iconic statue that sits at the fork in the road where Route 25 splits off from Route 25a.
 
 
Legend has it that Richard Smith had been given the land now encompassing Smithtown after he helped rescue the kidnapped daughter of a Montauk Chief. The limit of this land gift was said to be determined by the distance he could ride Smith bull over the course of one day. Historians say that this makes for a nice local myth but is not the actual truth of the matter. According to the Town of Smithtown, Lion Gardiner received a primary portion of the land now known as Smithtown from Grand Sachem Wyandanch, for helping to arrange the safe return of the chief s daug ....

Last month Christie was on vacation in Turks And Caicos with her daughter Sailor Brinkley-Cook who brought along her own boyfriend Ben Sosne.
The sizzling sensation has since apparently returned to her Hamptons home which is reportedly on the market for $29.5 million.

My love for local history began when I was archiving the collection at the Sag Harbor Historical Society’s Annie Cooper Boyd House on Main Street.
I spent a lot of afternoons alone there channeling Annie, the girl who rode bareback all the way to the bay and the woman who came back to this cottage as a young widow and remade herself as an artist. I started imagining the ancestral presence of Fannie Tunison, frequent visitor to the cottage and personages from Sag Harbor’s early past like Samuel L’Hommedieu who lived in the brick house down the street. ....
