Spring weather brings the start of a long-anticipated renovation and expansion project in Lake City at Stewart Memorial Community Hospital (SMCH). Fencing now surrounds a large area of the hospital parking lot to limit access for the safety of patients, visitors, staff and construction workers. “We are excited to see the building project moving forward,” says CEO, Cindy Carstens. “Over the next several months, many changes will occur as the construction crews work on each phase of the project. To assure that our patients and the community have the most up-to-date information on how these changes will affect them as they receive care at SMCH, our organization will provide timely updates highlighting that important information. Stewart Memorial Community Hospital (SMCH) in Lake City was recently presented the 2021 Women’s Choice Award as one of America’s best hospitals for obstetrics. Jenni Macke, SMCH Manager of Obstetrics, says they are excited and honored to receive this recognition for the fifth time since 2013. “The birth of a baby is a magical time. I have helped mothers in labor and delivery for 26 years, and I still love the anticipation and birth experience,” Macke says. “Dr. Derek Duncan and Dr. Susan Hornback are extremely knowledgeable, caring and compassionate as they welcome babies into the world and it is a pleasure to work with them.” Macke adds that the nurses have bedside techniques to aid in delivery and the board-certified anesthetists play a critical role in comfort solutions and pain management.
