When I saw her she was running sideways to say hello to someone
Lillian Lil Gibson died of COVID-19 on Nov. 2. The dialysis nurse and marathon runner was small but mighty with a big smile and warm personality.

Four years ago, Justin Gibson grabbed his camera and headed out to the Lincoln Marathon route to get some pictures of his mom.
It was already tricky because Lillian Gibson aptly nicknamed Lil was short and easy to miss in the throng.
But there was another reason.
“When I saw her, she was running sideways to say hello to someone, which was kind of typical,” her youngest son said. ....

'They came when we really needed 'em:' Officer's widow bonds with Nebraska family following tragedy

She wasn’t expecting anyone.
She didn’t recognize the small, white SUV.
And then they piled out, and one of them — a woman with wavy hair — looked familiar to Melissa Anderson.
In late August, Melissa had spent a week on the eighth floor of the University of Nebraska Medical Center at the bedside of her partner, Matt Schaeffer, the father of their two little ones and the man she’d planned to marry last spring before COVID-19 came.
There had been an accident, Matthew in the payloader helping pull a tractor stuck in the mud, the heavy chain breaking and slamming through the window of the loader and into the back of his head. ....

Lincoln man gives a shopping trip thank you to the Lighthouse for shining its love on him

And then they left Red Robin and headed to Super Target for some super (surprise!) shopping.
The co-owner of StarLinc Insurance — Aroun Phaisan — hatched the plan.
Phaisan is 39. His wife, Kim, is a nurse at CHI St. Elizabeth. They have two daughters, Tia and Evie — a teenager and a toddler.
The insurance man was a baby when he arrived in Lincoln with his parents and three older siblings.
He was born in a refugee camp.
His family fled Cambodia and the Khmer Rouge and ended up in North Carolina, sponsored by a family and its church. When that family moved to Lincoln, they followed, and the Church of the Brethren kept helping as they started over in a new land. ....

Cindy Lange-Kubick: Polio Pioneers waiting for a new vaccination

She kept them.
They are there somewhere in a box in a Houston garage — a card and a badge that declare Diane Parks a Polio Pioneer.
Parks is 74 now, a mother of three and a grandmother to six. She and her husband moved from Lincoln after college and eventually settled in the big oil city down south.
She remembers getting those shots back in Lincoln in 1955, one of millions of schoolchildren across the country who lined up for the Salk vaccination at the height of the polio epidemic.
She was 8. A student at Blessed Sacrament on Lake Street.
“I think probably most of the kids in my second-grade class did it,” Parks said. “They stuffed as many kids in a car as they could and we drove to St. Teresa’s across town.” ....
