WASHINGTON, June 29, 2021. The World Bank Board of Executive Directors approved today a US$300 million loan in support of Costa Rica’s Government efforts to protect people’s income and jobs from the impact of COVID-19, strengthen small and medium enterprises (SMEs), reinforce fiscal sustainability, and lay out foundations for a strong post pandemic recovery based on green and low-carbon development.
“This operation is part of a solid and long-lasting relationship with the World Bank,” said
Elian Villegas, Costa Rica’s Finance Minister.
“It supports our efforts to respond to the different waves of the pandemic, while continuing to set the conditions for a strong and sustainable recovery through economic, fiscal, and climate-action reforms.” ....

Nicaragua to Receive Emergency Funding Following Devastation Left by Eta and Iota

WASHINGTON, D.C., January 22, 2021 –The World Bank Board of Directors approved today a $80 million credit to support Nicaragua’s emergency response and recovery needs after the devastation caused by hurricanes Eta and Iota. The Nicaragua Hurricanes Eta and Iota Emergency Response Project will help the country’s disaster-relief response and restoration of services and economic activities in critical sectors in the most affeced communities.
The Project will prioritize the country’s efforts in the Caribbean Coast Autonomous Regions which were impacted by the compound effects of the two hurricanes. The Autonomous Regions have the highest incidence of extreme poverty in the country, making their population which includes a large number of indigenous people and Afro-descendants especially vulnerable to external shocks. WASHINGTON D.C., December 11, 2020 – The World Bank Board of Directors approved on December 8th a US$300 million loan to strengthen the Panamanian government’s health crisis response and economic recovery efforts. The financing will support the country s efforts and initiatives to invest in people through better health and education services, in institutions that are key for transparency and proper management of public finances, and in a robust post-pandemic recovery with an inclusive, environmentally responsible approach.
This is the first of two programmatic development policy loans to help cover the budgetary needs of the government during the health crisis. The loans prioritize the protection of the most vulnerable populations and the promotion of key public policies for inclusive economic recovery. ....
