NEW YORK, Jan. 26, 2021 /PRNewswire/ A group of the nation s leading Black clergy led by Rev. Al Sharpton and Rev. Calvin O. Butts, III kicked off its nationwide Choose Healthy Life (CHL) initiative yesterday to address health disparities in the Black community through the Black Church by hosting its first COVID-19 testing event at historic Abyssinian Baptist Church in Harlem, N.Y. The Choose Healthy Life Action Plan will provide services including COVID-19 testing, vaccine awareness and preventative health education through 50 churches across five cities in a historic partnership with United Way of New York City, Quest Diagnostics and America s leading public health experts. ....

Those are the words Ruby Holland Walden lived by until her death at age 99 in her native Suffolk on Tuesday, Dec. 22, 2020, her family said.
Though never elected to public office, Mrs. Walden became a force for community betterment in taking on multiple roles and freely âgiving her time and resources to uplift others,â her family said.
Along with being a wife and mother and business partner with her husband of 57 years, the late Frank L. Walden, a contractor and farmer, Mrs. Walden was a constant presence in civic affairs. ....

Ruby Holland Walden, 99, passed on December 22, 2020. She was born on October 20, 1921 in Nansemond County (now Suffolk) to the late Axium Holland and Pearl Langston Holland. She was the sixth of seven children, all who predeceased her: Gladys, Stanley, Thelma, Doris, Roswell, and Reginald. Ruby was a lifelong resident of Suffolk, VA.
In 1946, Ruby married her high school sweetheart, the late Frank LeGrant Walden, and four children were born to this union: Janice, Olin, Sandra and Pearl. Together they started their own contractor business that specialized in brick masonry and operated for 39 years, while also farming over 100 acres of family-owned land. Ruby served as Bookkeeper for these businesses and was also active in the civic and political processes that affected the people of her community, city, state, and nation.
