Iconic Designs: St Clerans

Download 2.55 MB
You don't have to go far in Ireland to discover links with Australia. Jjust outside Galway, there's a big one. St Clerans was the family home of Robert O'Hara Burke, who led the famously doomed expedition with his colleague William Wills to try and cross Australia from south to north, dying outside Coopers Creek in 1861. The landscape of the outback couldn't be further from the misty green lushness that surrounds St Clerans. Its architect was Richard Morrison, a man whose reverence for Classicism is clear from the way he named his son Vitruvius, after the Roman architect whose writings sparked the Classical revival in the Renaissance. The elegant and simple house was completed in 1811 using local stone. But it has oddities, like curved ends which give it an almost Art Deco feel, and a pronounced arch built into the façade to accentuate the entrance portico. It's these flashes of individual style that mark out Irish country houses from their English variants of the same period, as though they just couldn't help adding a little feature here and there. Morrison would go on to design Galway's solidly Classical courthouse and its austere gaol buildings, the gaol being demolished a century later to make way for the new cathedral.

Iconic Designs: the bowler hat

Download 3.58 MB
What a peculiar thing a bowler hat is. How can something so perfectly ordinary stand for so much? It started out in a perfectly normal way. The younger son of the Earl of Leicester, Edward Coke, decided the gamekeepers on the family estate, Holkham Hall in Norfolk, needed a hat that didn't get knocked off by low branches as they did their rounds. So in 1849 he went to London's venerable hat making firm, Lock & Co, who've been making hats since 1676, and set them the challenge. While the hat is properly called a Coke hat, the man who actually designed it was called Thomas Bowler, hence the bowler hat. What he created was a black felt hat with a hard, high dome and narrow brim. When Coke came to collect it, he checked its robustness by stamping on it, and thankfully it passed the test.

Kahn’s children urge B-school to preserve father’s legacy
Concerns and criticism mount over
Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad’s decision to raze 14 of the 18 dormitories designed by
Louis Kahn, one of the most influential architects of 20th century, to build new dorms. Now, Kahn’s three children and renowned architect and Pritzker Architecture Prize laureate Balkrishna Doshi have objected to the controversial decision that will rob IIMA of the pride it treasures in its heart.
Several architects, critics, artists and alumni came forward to strongly oppose the institute’s decision as they learnt of its Expression of Interest to invite firms to “create student housing using the existing footprints (land parcel) of these dormitory buildings.” Architect Kahn’s children Sue
