Wildlife specialist adds voice to plight of Onaqui mustangs

Wildlife ecologist Craig Downer will feature in a live presentation on the Onaqui mustang roundup by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) in the US.
Utah’s Onaqui wild horses are to be rounded up by helicopters, with the BLM intending to sell 400 of the horses.
Jane Unchained News Network, an advocate for environmental conservation. It is part of the network’s “Action Hour”, a talk show that discusses environmental conservation.
Downer will outline what is happening to Utah’s wild horses and what those interested can do to add their voice to the topic, and help prevent future herd “culling”. ....

Actress and former fashion model Katherine Heigl has joined advocates in the fight to stop a planned roundup of Utah’s most famous herd of wild horses the Onaqui of the west desert.
“With their historic place on the public lands of Utah, the Onaqui horses are living treasures that contribute to the beauty of the Great Basin Desert, as well as the economic vitality of nearby communities,” said Heigl, who lives in Summit County and keeps horses at her ranch in the Kamas Valley.
“Instead of cruel helicopter roundups, I call on the Bureau of Land Management to leave the Onaqui horses on the land, manage them humanely with fertility control, and limit livestock grazing to protect the ecosystem.” ....

More than 70 animal advocacy and conservation groups are calling on the Biden administration to eliminate livestock grazing on any public lands where wild horse populations exist, ramping up the debate on how rangelands should be used across the West, including in Utah.
Animal Wellness Action, the Animal Wellness Foundation, the Center for a Humane Economy, Western Watersheds and The Cloud Foundation joined a coalition of organizations demanding Interior Secretary Deb Haaland put a freeze on grazing permits, much like what was done for oil and gas drilling.
The groups assert that the Bureau of Land Management’s oversight of grazing permits is biased against wild horse populations and mass “roundups” are being driven by pressure from ranchers. ....
