City of Santa Monica Mayor Calls on Newsom to Shut Down Playa Del Rey Gas Facility, Create Transition Plan for Workers

City of Santa Monica Mayor Calls on Newsom to Shut Down Playa Del Rey Gas Facility, Create Transition Plan for Workers
May. 25, 2021 at 1:00 pm
In response to growing health, safety, and environmental concerns, Santa Monica Mayor Sue Himmelrich has sent a letter to Governor Newsom calling for the Playa del Rey gas facility to be closed. The letter, sent on behalf of the City Council, urges the governor to commit to a timeline for closure and initiate a fair and just transition process for the site’s decommissioning.
The gas facility’s wells and infrastructure at Playa del Rey extend underneath the Ballona Wetlands Ecological Reserve and have been the site of numerous leaks and blowouts, including a vent stack explosion in 2013 that caused a 100-foot flame to shoot into the air. The site was forced to shut down for over a year in 2011 after State regulators discovered a series of leaks. Community pressure to close the site has steadily grown in the wake of 2015’s Aliso Canyon Gas blowout. Nearly half a million people live within five miles of the Playa gas field — twice the number of residents living near Aliso.

Things to do: Silver Lake's stairs, L.A.'s bioblitz

Need a challenging new neighborhood route in L.A.? Head to Silver Lake for this tough 16-mile walking/running route that includes 40 historic staircases. And it counts only if you go
up the stairs. Cameron Kruse, 31, created the route (and the rules) because he was looking for close-to-home adventures to get him through the pandemic.
His quests usually take him to rock faces to climb, or the Himalayas, where he photographs and works on digital storytelling, something he calls “scrollytelling.” “My day job is a creative technologist. I figure out ways to tell stories with technology, but I moonlight as a National Geographic explorer,” the rock climber and runner said.

To Permit or Not to Permit?

It was mid-March 2020, and I was on edge while driving toward the entrance of Eaton Canyon Natural Area, a small slice of creek-fed greenspace that spills from the foot of Southern California’s San Gabriel Mountains into the suburban sprawl located just below.
A morning hike is not my typical cause for anxiety, of course. But there was this burgeoning pandemic, you see, and I was about to join a friend for a stroll along what is arguably one of the most popular trails in all of Los Angeles County. The 3.5-mile round-trip Eaton Canyon Trail ends at a slim waterfall that pours into a placid swimming hole. It’s the stuff of every dog’s, child’s, and Instagrammer’s delight.

LA lays out detailed paths to achieve 100 percent clean energy by 2045
LA100 helped LA set ambitious goals to transform it's electricity supply and electrify the buildings and transportation sectors to "combat climate change while capturing health and economic benefits."

The City of LA recently released it’s plan to transform its energy supply to achieve 100 percent clean energy by 2045. The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) partnered with the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) on the Los Angeles 100 Percent Renewable Energy Study (LA100), which analyzed different paths the city can take to achieve renewable energy in the future.

Inequitable access to the outdoors is a pervasive issue in California

In summary
Many of us have personal connections to California’s public lands and rivers; it’s imperative that we protect these places for the next generation.

Growing up, my family and I had limited access to parks and green space nearby. I learned of California’s iconic National Parks like Joshua Tree later in life, but my mom, like other low-income, single parents, either wasn’t aware of these places or couldn’t afford to take me.

The Wild: Best surprise in urban L.A.? These wetlands

Sign up to get The Wild sent weekly to your inbox.
Am I the only one who didn’t know about the wetlands in South Los Angeles? Last weekend I was invited to what I would call a curated park cleanup: Show up, pick up tools or garbage bags, dial into a conference call, and learn a little about the park through earbuds while you pick up trash — no contact required.
I went because the cleanup was held in South Los Angeles Wetlands Park, a place I had never heard of, at 5413 S. Avalon Blvd. As wetlands go, this one is a convincing imposter, described in a 2012 media account as “carved out from the industrial tundra of South Los Angeles.”
