Why the mayor won’t endorse a 3rd Ward candidate

PORTSMOUTH In politics, it all comes down to who has your back. Having someone’s back can mean anything from a vote to also publicly proclaiming support through front-yard signs or Facebook posts.
Endorsements of candidates are commonplace during any political season, regardless of what level. While the Scioto County Republican and Democrat parties backed the Trump-Pence or Biden-Harris ticket respectively last fall, they also pledged support to state and county candidates.
The 2021 elections will not have the draw of a presidential or even a congressional vote, a hyper-focused local attention instead of the case. The game for these local candidates- races in Portsmouth and New Boston city councils- however remains the same: winning votes. ....

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Legislation to restrict Gov. Mike DeWine’s ability to issue health orders has cleared the Ohio General Assembly, putting the Republican-controlled legislature and the Republican governor in another showdown on the issue.
Senate Bill 22 passed the House by a 57 to 35 vote on Wednesday, with almost all Republicans voting ‘yes’ and all Democrats voting ‘no.’ The legislation then passed a final Senate vote by a 25-8 margin. ....

COLUMBUS, Ohio Ohio lawmakers on Tuesday took their first look at new legislation that would give the legislature the power to strike down any executive order or emergency declaration issued by the governor.
Senate Bill 22 would also create a new legislative committee that could overrule Gov. Mike DeWine’s coronavirus orders, and it would require legislative approval for health emergencies to last longer than 30 days. ....
