A civil society organisation, the Advocates for Freedom and Democracy, has said Nigeria won’t regain its sanity until the restructuring of the country.
This was the resolution of speakers and members of the group at a virtual forum over the weekend. The event was themed, ‘Conversations On National Questions Series (1): Resetting Nigeria To Sanity’.
At the forum co-organised by the Christian Social Movement of Nigeria, one of the speakers, Pastor Bosun Emmanuel, said the forum was not for rebellion against the Nigerian state but to proffer workable solutions to restore sanity in the country. ....

KUNLE ODEREMI reflects on some similarities between Nigeria and Chile beyond the shared vestiges of military autocracy.
At the bottom of the multifaceted challenges confronting Nigeria is the legitimacy of the existing 1999 Constitution. In spite of the series of efforts to amend the document, the preponderance of stakeholders in the Nigerian project believe the constitution does not represent and reflect the genuine wishes and aspirations of the ethnic nationalities making up the country. Thus, the clarion call by many has been for a new constitution that to be drafted by the people through their representatives. ....

How we can substitute 1999 Constitution with 1963 model

THERE seems to be consensus among all political divides on the desirability and inevitability of a fundamental reform of our governance framework. It is also agreed that the 1979 and 1999 editions of our constitution are fundamentally defective regarding this most basic requirement for consensual self-government by the ethnic nationalities of Nigeria. Mere amendments as have been undertaken at about N10 billion per iteration since 1999 by the National Assembly seems not to have doused the clamour for restructuring of the Nigerian polity. Virtually all civil society bodies drawn from the six geopolitical zones have, in recent months, been quite strident in calling for the country to be restructured. ....

Federalism is the answer, after all - Part 7 | The Guardian Nigeria News - Nigeria and World NewsOpinion — The Guardian Nigeria News – Nigeria and World News

The foundational problems of Nigeria remain topical on the agenda, though with conflicting perspectives. However, they are problems we must resolve. It will be recalled that against the backdrop of resource control and overall restructuring of the state system, the incumbent political leaders had 2015 before their election made restructuring a manifesto item. According to the All Progressives Congress’ (APC) manifesto, an APC government would “Initiate action to amend our Constitution with a view to devolving powers, duties and responsibilities to states and local governments in order to entrench true Federalism and the Federal spirit” among other constitutional reforms.
There was obvious hesitation on the part of the government once it assumed office. It took years in office to activate the El-Rufai Committee on restructuring. The committee carried out its consultation and compacted its report submitted since January 2018, which is yet to be implemented.  ....
