Phillips Presses Climate Envoy Kerry About Permitting for Transnational Pipelines


Dear Secretary Kerry:
Thank you for joining the House Foreign Affairs Committee hearing on May 12th titled, “Driving a Global, Whole-of-Society Response to Climate Action.” Tackling climate change takes more than just one person, one corporation, or one country. We need a comprehensive, international response to this crisis to ensure the best future for our children and our children s children.
As you know, the State Department handles all Presidential permits for cross-border pipelines. In my home state of Minnesota, Enbridge is currently replacing over 337 miles of pipe in its Line 3 crude oil pipeline that runs from Alberta to Wisconsin. Line 3 was originally constructed in the 1960s with service starting in 1968 before the National Environmental Policy Act was enacted in the 1970s. When Enbridge sought to replace Line 3 in 2014, the State Department determined that the replacement project did not need a new Presidential permit. Understandably, there are some valid ....

Fiji and US reaffirm support in fighting climate change

Fiji and the United States has reaffirmed commitments to strengthen bilateral engagements and partnership in fighting climate change, protecting oceans and biodiversity and in COVID-19 recovery.
In congratulating Special Envoy Kerry’s appointment as the first United States Special Presidential Envoy for Climate, Prime Minister Bainimarama acknowledged his leadership and contributions in global affairs and in shaping US bilateral relations with Fiji and the Pacific.
PM Bainimarama also conveyed Fiji’s appreciation to President Biden for his strong global leadership and commitment in resolving the critical global issues of our time, especially in recognizing the special circumstances faced by Small Islands Developing States. ....

This morning Fijian Prime Minister Josaia Voreqe Bainimarama and the United States Special Presidential Envoy on Climate, Secretary John Kerry discussed aspirations to advance Fiji and the United States relations.

Three Republican members of the House Foreign Affairs Committee demanded Wednesday that the inspector general at the U.S. Department of State investigate Special Envoy John Kerry to determine the validity of recently surfaced allegations that he shared sensitive information about Israeli military operations with Iran.
Reps. Andy Barr (R-KY), Ann Wagner (R-MO), and Lee Zeldin (R-NY) made the demand for an immediate, impartial probe in a letter sent Wednesday to Diana Shaw, the acting IG who oversees the State Department, asking her to “investigate Special Envoy Kerry’s relationship with Iranian Foreign Minister [FM Mohammad Javad] Zarif and determine whether his security clearance should be revoked or not.” ....
