WASHINGTON The Pentagon wants industry to bring cheap, ground-launched capabilities as well as hand-held options to destroy small drones to its next demonstration in an effort to acquire new technology to combat the unmanned threat, according to a request for information posted May 7 to the federal contracting website beta.sam.gov.
The Joint Counter-Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems Office and the Army’s Rapid Capabilities and Critical Technologies Office are running the September 2021 demonstration. The JCO and RCCTO want whitepapers to help them choose participants who have possible solutions that fit either in the cheap, ground-launched counter-UAS ....

Border Police Wants Bite of Burgeoning Anti-Drone Industry

The tests are part of a rapid effort by the U.S. government to develop an answer to small drones, which are increasingly being used by terror groups and drug cartels. The staggering demand hundreds of millions of dollars’ worth of funding for research, in contrast to the relatively cheap cost of small consumer drones has already created a private economy to produce counter-drone technology for the military, involving dozens of aerospace and defense companies.
In the current fiscal year, the Defense Department is looking to spend at least $404 million on research and development and at least $83 million on procurement of counter-UAS technology, according to a report by the Congressional Research Service. And other agencies, including Customs and Border Protection, are looking to capture a share of the market, raising concerns that the efforts could lead to further surveillance and militarization of the U.S.-Mexico border. ....

Army kicks off first major test to thwart small drone attacks -- Defense Systems

By Lauren C. Williams
Apr 21, 2021
The Army is putting its new counter small unmanned aerial systems strategy to the test with its first demonstration at Yuma Proving Ground, focusing on how to limit damage when facing direct threats.
Leland Browning, the deputy director for the Joint Counter-Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems Office (JCO), said the Army has completed its first small drone demo, testing intercept capabilities from three different platforms.
This first demonstration, which was a joint effort between the JCO, Army and Air Force, was designed to look at low collateral effects intercepted capabilities, which are defined solutions that defeat small UAS in an environment that requires minimal minimum collateral damage for the surrounding environment, Browning told reporters April 16. ....
