School districts across the Santa Clarita Valley endured an ever-changing school year that included sudden classroom-setting changes, cancelation of events and now a significant decrease in student enrollment which has led to some teachers receiving notices about potential layoffs if the funding situation doesn’t improve.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reduced physical distancing guidelines from 6 feet to 3 feet in a classroom setting, but local school districts cannot make changes until the state and county’s guidance aligns.
Los Angeles County Public Health officials on Friday confirmed 60 new deaths and 756 new cases of COVID-19 countywide, with 26,944 total cases in the Santa Clarita Valley. In addition, nearly 3,235,000 doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered to people across Los Angeles County. ....

SCVNews.com | Candlelight Vigil in Remembrance of Pedro Roman Scheduled for Thursday

Family members of 17-year-old Pedro Roman announced Monday the Valencia High School student died, following a recent relapse of his cancer.
Pedro was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia in 2019. Since his diagnosis, support and love has poured in for Pedro and his family.
Football teammates shaved their heads in support of him undergoing chemotherapy, and the student section at Valencia High School honored him with banners and T-shirts showing his name during one of their football games. On Saturday, dozens showed up at a community blood drive in honor of their classmate.
In remembrance of Pedro, a community candlelight vigil has been organized. The event is set to take place at Central Park at 8:00 p.m. Thursday. ....

LA County Launches Small Business Loan Program

LOS ANGELES (CNS) - The Los Angeles County Development Authority launched a small business loan program today to help prevent job losses and business closures amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Small Business Stabilization Loan Program is funded with $10 million from the U.S. Economic Development Administration through a federal COVID-19 relief act.
Loans ranging from $50,000 to $3 million will be given to eligible businesses that have been in operation for at least two years, are seeking working capital, equipment purchases, real estate acquisition or refinancing of existing loans at higher interest rates.
“The recent surge in COVID-19 cases is once again harming the vitality of small businesses in the county of Los Angeles, Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors Chair Hilda L. Solis said in previewing the program last week. ....

Because of the recent rainfall, Los Angeles County Health Officer Muntu Davis, MD, MPH, is cautioning residents about beach water use due to bacteria, chemicals, debris, trash, and other public health hazards from city streets and mountain areas that are likely to contaminate ocean waters at and around discharging storm drains, creeks, and rivers.
Individuals who enter the water in these areas could become ill.
This advisory will be in effect until at least Wednesday, January 27 at 7:30 a.m. and may be extended depending on further rainfall.
Recorded information on beach water use conditions is available 24 hours a day at 1-800-525-5662. ....
