This year, the YMCA of Metropolitan Dallas had to permanently shut down three of its locations and lay off 120 people.
But the community needs only grew as the nonprofit spent much of 2020 helping others through the pandemic by distributing food and nearly 500 computers. Just this week, staff filled up boxes with turkeys, cranberries, corn and other holiday meal essentials. ....

In a stunning announcement, Prairie View A&M University has revealed that the school has received a $50 million gift from writer and philanthropist MacKenzie Scott, making it the largest one received in the school’s history.
When Scott gave notice of her intention to donate the money, she had given a restriction about what could be disclosed about the gift. She requested that the gift be anonymous, and the specific amount could not be revealed. After Scott announced the gift, it released the university from those conditions. ....

Prairie View A&M University received $50 million from writer and philanthropist MacKenzie Scott the largest donation in the historically black college’s 144-year history, according to a university release.
The university, which was given the choice on how to use the funds, will create a $10 million Panther Success Grant program, a financial aid initiative to assist juniors and seniors facing financial challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“This is a historic gift for Prairie View, coming at a time when the university had already decided and begun to invest heavily in key areas to strengthen its academic programs and improve student success. The timing of this gift could therefore not be better,” President Ruth J. Simmons said in a written statement. ....
