The Florence County Unified Fire District now has four more water rescue boats to help during hurricanes, flooding and other catastrophic events, according to Florence County Fire and Rescue Services Coordinator Sam Brockington.
Brockington said all seven fire stations are equipped with boats, bringing the total number of them to 11 across the county.
He added they responded to several water rescues during Hurricane Matthew in 2016 and Hurricane Florence in 2018 but didn t have enough boats to adequately respond. Back in the famous flood of 2016 and the hurricanes after that, we realized the significant need for water rescue in this county. When the flooding gets far beyond what s normal, people had to be rescued from their homes and had never experienced anything from the likes of this. And while Elsa isn’t expected to have a major impact in the area, there’s always a concern when heavy rain is in the forecast.
“Oh, it was a whole lot of rain,” says Cheraw resident Samuel Curry.
It left Riverside Park underwater for days.
“It was backed up all the way up the street. I mean couldn’t even get down in here,” Curry says.
Samuel Talley ate dinner Tuesday night under a picnic shelter that was underwater when Hurricane Florence rolled through in September 2018.
