Although large employers have sung the praises of the retail, grocery, health care, delivery and other workers deemed essential during the pandemic, they ve generally resisted raising the pay of this mostly low-wage workforce.
Oxnard, California, is trying to buck that trend. The city of 200,000 is giving a $1,000 bonus to every essential worker who was employed at least three months during the heath crisis. About 1,700 workers will receive the gratitude pay, according to the United Food and Commercial Workers Local 770, which represents about 450 affected workers. ....

Kansas lawmakers have extended the state’s COVID-19 disaster declaration with some adjustments.
The extension from the Legislative Coordinating Council continues the disaster emergency to June 15, two weeks shorter than what Kansas Governor Laura Kelly had proposed. However, it also revokes a moratorium on evictions and foreclosures effective immediately.
Republicans on the committee, including House Majority Leader Dan Hawkins of Wichita, are calling for an exit strategy on COVID-19 disaster policies as soon as possible. ....

Kansas lawmakers agree to extend COVID-19 emergency but end eviction, foreclosure ban

A panel of top legislators voted Friday to extend the state s COVID-19 disaster declaration until June 15 in an effort to give the Kansas National Guard and other agencies time to wind down any ongoing emergency operations.
But as part of the deal, members nixed an executive order from Gov. Laura Kelly banning evictions and foreclosures, which has been in existence off and on since spring of last year. ....
