Montgomery Co. council member seeks changes on dangerous stretch of Georgia Ave.

Less than two weeks after a woman was struck and killed by a car on Georgia Avenue in Silver Spring, Maryland, just a few blocks from where her husband was also hit and killed a few years ago, a member of the Montgomery County Council is seeking action.
Calling the tragic coincidence “particularly distressing,” Council Member Nancy Navarro wrote to Maryland Transportation Secretary Greg Slater to ask that the State Highway Administration “take immediate action” to make that stretch of Georgia Avenue safer for pedestrians.
Claire E. Weissmeyer Grossmann, of the Aspen Hill neighborhood of Silver Spring, was killed crossing Georgia Avenue near Rippling Brook Drive on April 28. She was 63. Her husband, Robert Grossman, 64, was crossing Georgia Avenue when he was hit and killed by a car near Regina Drive, about 1,000 feet away from Rippling Brook Drive, in October 2016, a neighbor said last month. ....

A pedestrian died after a car hit her in Aspen Hill Wednesday night, Montgomery County police said.
Claire E. Weissmeyer Grossmann, 63, of Silver Spring, was trying to cross Georgia Avenue near its intersection with Rippling Brook Drive, police said in a press release.
German Alexis Del Cid Mejia, 19, of Rockville, was driving a 2015 Toyota Camry north on Georgia Avenue when his car struck Grossmann around 11 p.m. Wednesday, police said.
Grossmann was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
Mejia was not injured.
Police had posted about the crash on Twitter earlier on Thursday, but did not include details about the crash or the identity of the driver and victim. ....

Silver Spring Woman Killed as She Crossed Georgia Avenue
Claire E. Weissmeyeer Grossman, 63, of Silver Spring was pronounced dead at the scene after she was struck by a car as she was crossing northbound Georgia Avenue April 28.
Detectives from the Montgomery County Police Department, Collision Reconstruction Unit, are investigating the collision that took place at 11:02 p.m. by Rippling Brook Drive in Aspen Hill. Preliminary investigation determined that the 2015 Toyota Camry was going north on Georgia Avenue and struck Weissmeyer.
German Alexis Del Cid Mejia, 19, of Rockville was driving the car. He was not injured.
