U.S. bobsled pilot Kaillie Humphries earned a gold medal in the two-woman event with Lolo Jones on Feb. 6 during the International Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation’s World Championships at Altenberg, Germany. That win was supposed to happen on the home track in Lake Placid. The 2021 World Championships were moved from Lake Placid to Altenberg, Germany due to the coronavirus pandemic, essentially robbing New York’s Olympic village from this historic moment. Exactly 90 years ago – on Feb. 6, 1931 bobsledding made its competitive debut at the Mount Van Hoevenberg run, built for the III Olympic Winter Games in 1932. (The Lake Placid Olympic Museum recognizes Dec. 25, 1930 as the big historic moment on that run since it was the first time passengers rode a bobsled down it.)

Kaillie Humphries is headed into the final day of the major international sliding season with a chance at another world championship.
Humphries is in second place midway through the inaugural womenâs monobob world championship race, trailing Germanyâs Stephanie Schneider by 0.04 seconds after Saturdayâs first two runs in Altenberg, Germany.
The final two runs are Sunday.
âWeâve only had so many runs on this track, and we didnât get our monobob sleds until January,â Humphries said. âWeâre still learning, and on one of the most technically challenging tracks in the world.â
Humphries, Jones win historic world bobsled title for US

Kaillie Humphries got some help from a U.S. bobsled legend on her way to making history Saturday.
Humphries is the world women’s bobsled champion for a record fourth time, teaming with Lolo Jones to win the title on a snowy day in Altenberg, Germany. Humphries and Jones finished their four runs over two days in 3 minutes, 48.26 seconds.
And Humphries drove to the title in a sled equipped with runners that were owned by Steven Holcomb, the former world and Olympic champion who died nearly four years ago.
