That’s because while future pandemics as well as a wide range of natural disasters are unavoidable, that doesn’t mean we have to live through the worst-case scenarios, or that the worst cases cannot be improved.

The Red River runs through Minnesota, North Dakota, and Manitoba. It s 890 km long, with the confluence source of Bois de Sioux and Otter Tail Rivers in Wahpeton, North Dakota, and feeding into Lake Winnipeg.
In 1950, the river flooded, eight dikes broke and large portion of Winnipeg was overtaken by water. Around 70,000 people were evacuated. Because of this flood, Manitoba s Premier, Duff Roblin, initiated the Red River Floodway (a manufactured flood-control waterway). ....

With robust demand for housing and major projects on the way or under construction, the post-pandemic future looks bright for the Fargo-Moorhead area.
The region hopes to get a big boost from major projects that include a 1.3-million square-foot Amazon distribution center under construction in Fargo, and a $2.75 billion flood diversion project designed to protect homes and businesses from the swelling Red River.
Overseen by the St. Paul office of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the diversion project is expected to generate thousands of jobs and offer long-term economic benefits on both sides of the river in the fast-growing region. ....

Legislation tabled to create new income support program for individuals with disabilities

Families Minister Rochelle Squires introduced legislation designed to create a new income support program for individuals living with severe and prolonged disabilities who have no other means of supporting themselves.
Bill 72 would create a new program separate from Employment and Income Assistance and would include disability support payments and shelter assistance tailored to the unique and specific needs of the individual.

“This will move about 10,000 people out of (EI) who are severe and prolonged (disabled) into a different category so they will no longer have to receive exemptions for not finding work,” said Squires. “It will make life easier for them. Parts of Manitoba are just about vanishing beneath a winter storm that would be considered extreme even if it weren t unusually early. Friday featured the worst of the storm, but there are still more than a few flakes to fall into Saturday, while other parts of the province are in for torrential downpours.
