CTA's $2.1B RPM Improvement Project Begins This Spring : CEG

Tue March 02, 2021 - Midwest Edition #5
CTA
Most of the new track structure in the Lawrence to Bryn Mawr project area will be built with pre-cast concrete segments that are created off-site, trucked in and installed with a gantry system.
Mayor Lori Lightfoot and the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) unveiled the designs for four Red Line stations that will be fully reconstructed as part of the
Red and Purple Modernization (RPM) Phase One project, the largest transit investment in CTA history and the latest among several Red Line improvement projects over the last decade.
CTA will rebuild the Lawrence, Argyle, Berwyn and Bryn Mawr rail stations, transforming each into new, modern, larger and fully accessible stations to customers with disabilities. The new stations will include elevators and escalators, wider platforms and vastly improved amenities, better serving the more than four million customers who enter the stations each year. ....

There's movement on south Red Line extension, but service launch pushed back 3 years – Streetsblog Chicago

Ever since the Nixon era, Far South Siders have been asking for the Red Line, which currently stops at 95th Street, to be extended south to the city limits. They got some good news yesterday, as the CTA passed a milestone for winning roughly $1 billion in federal funding needed for the $2.3 billion project. But in a somewhat frustrating development, the earliest potential start date for train service on the route, originally slated for 2026, has been postponed until 2029.
As reported by the Chicago Sun-Times’ Stefano Esposito, the CTA announced on Monday that the Federal Transit Administration has granted preliminary approval for the 5.6-mile addition, which will go as far south as 130th Street, serving the Altgeld Gardens housing project. However, the transit agency also shared the bad news of the three-year service launch delay, explaining that the 2026 start date was a “preliminary” estimate based on “limited information.” The CTA needs to finalize the project’s ....

Great news for the Far South Side: CTA Red Line extension takes a big step toward reality

CTA
There is good news for the South Side this week as CTA officials announced the preliminary approval of $1 billion in federal transit funds to build the long-awaited Red Line extension.
If built, the $2.3 billion project would extend the rapid transit line 5.6 miles south to 130th Street from its current terminus at 95th Street. This would help bridge one of the city’s more egregious transit inequities, finally giving the vast Far South Side a faster link to jobs and other opportunities downtown and points beyond.
The CTA announced the funding from the Federal Transportation Administration on Monday.
“While this year has brought forth a tremendous amount of uncertainty, one thing that remains certain is CTA’s unwavering commitment to advancing the Red Line Extension project,” CTA President Dorval R. Carter Jr., said in a statement. ....

CTA takes 'significant' step toward securing funding for Red Line extension

Ashlee Rezin/Chicago Sun-Times,
The Chicago Transit Authority’s planned Red Line extension has made a “significant” step toward securing about $1 billion in federal funds, the transit agency announced Monday.
Without the Federal Transportation Administration’s preliminary approval of the CTA’s plans, the project likely would have hit a dead-end, CTA officials said.
But officials also said train service on the 5.6-mile extension if the federal money is approved is set to begin in 2029, three years later than originally planned. The earlier date was a preliminary estimate and based on “limited information,” according to the CTA.
The CTA now has two years to complete the next phase, which includes finalizing the project’s environmental impact statement and drawing up preliminary engineering documents. ....
