Vaccines are likely to be approved for our 12-16 year olds next week. Pres. Biden has set the goal of 70% of Americans to be vaccinated with a first dose by July 4th. Israel saw something like herd immunity kick in around 55-60% vaccination rates, so we are close. Things are moving in the right direction.
So, perhaps it’s time to start hugging friends we haven’t seen in months. And, if you know of folks who are vaccinated but still in isolation away from the pandemic, reach out to see if you might coax them out from behind their anxiety. It’s time to be intentional about testing the waters of a return to whatever our new normal might become. ....

1. Rep. Eileen Cody, session in review
Washington’s 2021 legislative session wrapped up over the weekend, concluding what was an impressive session for progressives. We caught up with Rep. Eileen Cody, Chair of the House Health Care & Wellness Committee, to get her take on the health policy themes that emerged this session.
Cody says health equity, the COVID-19 response, and public health were some of the top issues in the health care sphere. She also described Sen. David Frockt’s Cascade Care bill as one of the biggest health policy bills to move forward this year (more on that below). As it relates to the budget, she says funding for mental health and substance use disorder were probably the biggest adds, along with public health support and funding for exchange subsidies. “I would say that there wasn’t a lot of glitz to the things that happened in health care this year, but certainly it got a huge infusion of money.” ....

1. Proposal for $1.02 billion in ARPA funding
Gov. Mike Dunleavy on Friday released his allocation proposal for $1.02 billion in federal funds coming into Alaska through the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA). The proposal includes $80 million for emergency response costs including $6 million toward addressing the domestic violence impacts of the pandemic, $150 million for tourism revitalization, and $325 million in infrastructure investments. ....
