Food pantry patrons make healthier choices when foods are organized by nutrition level, new research shows.
Using a food categorizing system called Supporting Wellness at Pantries that ranks different foods based on their level of saturated fat, sodium and added sugars, researchers found patrons selected 11% more healthy foods and decreased unhealthy choices by 7%.
The most important finding from this study is that people who go to food pantries, like all of us, want to eat a healthy diet, and it s very hard to quickly figure out which items are the healthiest, said Marlene Schwartz, director of the Rudd Center for Food Policy and Obesity and an author of the study. NORWOOD – Nick Campagna has walked the walk for 36 years.
He has supported Project Bread through the annual Walk for Hunger, which is going virtual for the second straight year.
“In normal years we would put up a display at the Town Hall and put up posters around town. But last year and this year we have had to rely mostly on social media and the Food Pantry website,” said Campagna, who has served as captain of the Norwood Food Pantry team for the past 11 years. ....

EAGAN, Minn., Feb. 23, 2021 /PRNewswire/ Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota and Blue Plus (Blue Plus) today announced a new program with Second Harvest Heartland and Project Well to study the impact of comprehensive dietary support on maternal and infant health outcomes. The research project will recruit pregnant Black and Indigenous Blue Plus members with indicators linked to high-risk pregnancy to participate and receive up to seven months of nutrition benefits and services. The program will also take into consideration the nutritional needs of the whole household, including other children.
Pregnancy-related death and infant mortality rates are much higher among Black and Indigenous families, as compared to the white population. These inequities are rooted in systemic racism and disproportionate access to adequate prenatal care and nutrition, said Christine Reiten, vice president of Medicaid at Blue Cross and Blue ....
