Trinity School, which sits on the site of a Civil War site, Fort Henderson, was one of the last all-black schools. It closed in 1970 when integration became law.

In the 1900s, Black children in North Alabama thought of Trinity School not as a place to be separate from whites, but as a second home for them.
You have to understand, you have to look at the atmosphere. What it was like in the 60s and 70s. Here was a place where Black folks could come and you felt like you were somebody. You were treated like you were somebody. And people cared for you. And they wanted you to be the best that you could be, said Trinity School Class of 1970 graduate Barbara Clemons. ....

Athens City Council announces FY 2021 appropriations

When the Athens City Council reviewed and passed a budget in September for the upcoming 2021 fiscal year, one item that was not included was appropriations.
After going over the requests, the list of appropriations for both governmental agencies and nonprofits was announced during Monday s Council meeting.
Each year, local nonprofits submit requests for funds, and it is up to the Council to approve or deny the request and assign what amount, if any, will be given to each group. Appropriations are drawn from money not otherwise allocated from the general fund. ....

TVA, Athens Utilities pass out more CARES funds

Athens Main Street was given $11,000 to help fund family-friendly holiday events like the Christmas Open House and Sippin Cider.
“For our local merchants, holiday sales constitute 40 percent of their yearly revenue, and these (holiday) activities also encourage people to shop and eat local while they are enjoying the events downtown,” Athens Main Street Director Tere Richardson wrote in her application.
The Alabama Veterans Museum and Archives was granted $3,000.
“The museum develops and maintains the preservation of archives and artifacts that exemplify the achievements and memories of armed forces veterans,” Hollman said. “The museum also offers programs for veterans and the public, such as patriotic programs, Coffee Call, etc.” ....

TVA and Athens Utilities give support community agencies


 
 
The Tennessee Valley Authority recently announced a second round of Cares funding for non-profit agencies. TVA partnered with local power companies like Athens Utilities to provide these funds to support local initiatives that benefit communities.
 
For this second round, TVA allocated $20,000 for Limestone County, and Athens Utilities allocated $20,000 from the Electric Department’s marketing budget for a total of $40,000. TVA and Athens Utilities also allocated $20,000 each during the first round of TVA Cares funding distributed in May.
 
“These agencies make a difference in the lives of our citizens, and I am glad we can join TVA in supporting their work,” Athens Electric Department Manager Blair Davis said. ....

ATHENS, Ala. (WAFF) - TVA and Athens Utilities joined together to help businesses impacted by the pandemic.
TVA donated $20,000 and Athens Utilities matched that donation. $40,000 will be awarded to 8 different agencies in the Athens area. Those agencies were presented with a check Friday.
Athens Mayor Ronnie Marks says this was a great opportunity right before Christmas.
“Good Christmas present, it went from I think 11-thosuand dollars for Athens Main Street, to a couple of ten thousand dollar checks all the way down to 1-thousand dollar checks that was presented. Anytime we get a 50-50 match, I hope next check they send us is 100-thousand,” said Marks. ....
