When the Athens City Council reviewed and passed a budget in September for the upcoming 2021 fiscal year, one item that was not included was appropriations.
After going over the requests, the list of appropriations for both governmental agencies and nonprofits was announced during Monday s Council meeting.
Each year, local nonprofits submit requests for funds, and it is up to the Council to approve or deny the request and assign what amount, if any, will be given to each group. Appropriations are drawn from money not otherwise allocated from the general fund.

Athens Main Street was given $11,000 to help fund family-friendly holiday events like the Christmas Open House and Sippin Cider.
“For our local merchants, holiday sales constitute 40 percent of their yearly revenue, and these (holiday) activities also encourage people to shop and eat local while they are enjoying the events downtown,” Athens Main Street Director Tere Richardson wrote in her application.
The Alabama Veterans Museum and Archives was granted $3,000.
“The museum develops and maintains the preservation of archives and artifacts that exemplify the achievements and memories of armed forces veterans,” Hollman said. “The museum also offers programs for veterans and the public, such as patriotic programs, Coffee Call, etc.”

ATHENS, Ala. (WAFF) - TVA and Athens Utilities joined together to help businesses impacted by the pandemic.
TVA donated $20,000 and Athens Utilities matched that donation. $40,000 will be awarded to 8 different agencies in the Athens area. Those agencies were presented with a check Friday.
Athens Mayor Ronnie Marks says this was a great opportunity right before Christmas.
“Good Christmas present, it went from I think 11-thosuand dollars for Athens Main Street, to a couple of ten thousand dollar checks all the way down to 1-thousand dollar checks that was presented. Anytime we get a 50-50 match, I hope next check they send us is 100-thousand,” said Marks.
